Born Winchester, Virginia 3 June 1935.  Educated at Washington & Lee University (AB 1958), Virginia
Theological Seminary (BD 1961), Oxford University (Dipl. 1965), and Princeton University (MA 1973,
PhD 1978).  

Ordained Deacon and Priest, 1961.  Served as Missionary in Uganda, 1961-71; served on the faculty of
Bishop Tucker College 1962-66 and Makerere College 1966-71.  Episcopal Church Foundation Fellow
1971-74.  Faculty, Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, 1974-79.  Faculty, General
Theological Seminary, New York, 1980-91.  Dean, Berkeley Divinity School/Yale, 1991-98. Interim
Dean, Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, Texas, 2005-.
